Networking and the Power of Questions

QI’m in the business of coaching professionals how to connect and network efficiently as well as effectively.  In a world where opportunity is everywhere, it often boils down to knowing the right way to expand your network and recognizing how to seize possibilities missed by most.  If networking isn’t something you have a lot of time for, how can you maximize your potential in the time you do have?

One of the most powerful ways to meet new people at your next leadership eventor business conference is to ask a question in front of a large group.  I refer to this strategy as “one-to-many” marketing.  At the end of a workshop or presentation, speakers often open the floor for questions – this is your opportunity!  Seize the moment and introduce yourself before you ask your question.  This method adds seconds to your time on the microphone yet the benefits are that you greet not one, two or even ten people, but hundreds at one time!

The Power of Questions | 4 Points
To make the most of your opportunity, include these four points before asking your question.

1. Your name

2. Your organization’s name or industry

3. Your title or role

4. Ask your question (relate to topic shared by speaker)

Example
“My name is Bill Smith and I am an IT Project Manager for an aerospace company in St. Louis.  You mentioned the pros/cons of leveraging DevOps in your program but we are facing some challenges with that method currently.  My question is  _________________________.”

Questions that include a brief introduction can be powerful tools.  It might surprise you but this simple method often generates interest in others and has the possibility of piquing audience curiosity.  It can be a great conversation starter and those who are interested in learning more about you, your company, or your program will find ways to introduce themselves to you during the event.
